Child psychologists are a specialised branch of traditional psychology that focuses on development and behaviour from birth to adolescence.
A person’s childhood is often perceived to be a very simple and easy process however for the child it can be much more complicated.
Research shows that ‘events’ that happen in childhood even small usually has a direct influence on how that person will develop later into adulthood.
A child psychologist will base a diagnosis from a thorough assessment, including asking questions regarding milestones, behaviour difficultes, social skills, mental and emotional wellbeng and development.
Child psychologists will form a diagnosis for example, Aspergers Disorder (ASD), Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), Seperation anxiety, Depression plus many more based on the initial assessment.
Treatment plans vary and are tailored for each individual child. Therapies may include, cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), play therapy, family therapy, attachment therapy, relational therapy plus others.
Child psychologist’s form a gentle and safe attachment with the young person and their family to attempt to understand the child’s world through their eyes. Children feel a certain way however, are unable to articulate ‘why’ they feel a certain way. Through psycho-education a child and family learn to understand the reasons and how they can help the young person.
A child psychologist will give that young person a bag of tools for them to use in life. It may be challenging their belief systems and thought processes, counting to 10, learning how to make friends or understanding the link between feelings and thoughts. Working closely with families is essential for the child’s progress.
